Background
Kendrick Lamar began working on Section.80 in January 2011, after releasing his fourth mixtape Overly Dedicated in 2010. He recorded most of the album in his mother's kitchen and his tour bus, using minimal equipment and resources. He said that he wanted to make the album "as organic as possible", and that he left some songs unfinished for months to capture his true emotions. He also said that he was inspired by a visit to South Africa in 2010, where he witnessed poverty and injustice firsthand.
The title of the album refers to Section 8 housing, a government program that provides subsidized housing for low-income families in the US. Kendrick Lamar said that he chose this title because he wanted to represent his generation, who grew up in such environments and faced various challenges and temptations. He also said that he wanted to create a soundtrack for his generation, who are often misunderstood and stereotyped by society.
