The Plot of Aaja Nachle
The film follows Dia (Madhuri Dixit), a choreographer who lives in New York with her daughter Radha. One day, she receives a phone call from India, informing her that her old dance teacher Makarand (Darshan Jariwala) is dying. She decides to return to her hometown Shamli with Radha, to pay her respects and fulfill his last wish.
When she arrives in Shamli, she finds out that Makarand has already passed away and left her the responsibility of saving the Ajanta theatre, a place where she learned to dance and where he nurtured many talents. However, the theatre is in a dilapidated state and is about to be demolished by the local politician Raja Uday Singh (Akshaye Khanna) to make way for a shopping mall.
Dia challenges Raja to let her put on a performance using only people from Shamli, and if she succeeds, he will cancel the demolition. Raja agrees, but gives her only two months to prepare. Dia then sets out to scout for talent among the townspeople, who are mostly indifferent or hostile towards her. She faces many obstacles and hardships along the way, but also finds support and friendship from some unexpected sources.
She manages to recruit a diverse group of performers, including Imran (Kunal Kapoor), a rebellious youth who becomes her lead actor; Anokhi (Konkona Sen Sharma), a tomboyish girl who dreams of becoming an actress; Mohan (Ranvir Shorey), a clumsy but enthusiastic tailor; Sanjeev (Jugal Hansraj), a shy photographer; and Farooque (Irrfan Khan), Dia's childhood friend who is now married to Najma (Divya Dutta), Dia's former rival.
Dia decides to stage a musical adaptation of the classic love story Laila-Majnu, hoping to inspire and unite the people through the power of art. However, she also has to deal with her own personal issues, such as her strained relationship with her parents, her unresolved feelings for Raja, and her daughter's future.
